Targeted Skill Focus: Prediction and cause and effect
Social Studies; to teach Friendship, Sharing, Kindness, and Wants and Needs.
1/ I placed: box of crayons, paper, an empty milk carton, straw, mirror, scissors, pen, and tape in a bag. I did this pre-reading activity with a group of 4 students; students took turns to take one object from the bag, we named and talked about each object. Each student took 2 objects. I asked them what do you think the story is about?
2/ I asked the students if they have heard sentences like these: "If you finish your work, you may watch television" or "If you stop talking, you may go to recess."
Then I explained that the first part of each sentence says something that might happen. It is called the "cause." The second part of the sentence tells what might happen because the first thing happened. It is called the "effect." I explained that because the work was finished, permission was given to watch television. Because the class stopped talking, permission was given to go to recess.
Using student responses to reinforce the cause/effect relationship, I asked the students how this sentence might end: "If you clean your room, you may..." the responses were; go play outside; watch TV; and play your video game.
I introduced the book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, by reading the first line of the story, "If you give a mouse a cookie..." and I asked them to predict what the effect might be. On a chart paper I wrote what the mouse will need after he is finished eating the cookie. The student who had the empty milk carton will put it. I continued asking students what else he would need, until the students lined up all the objects they had.
I applied the pre-reading activity while it was fresh, right after we introduced to it in class (Mice and Beans). The activities went very well (with my two groups Friday and today’s group). The students really enjoyed the reading, I haven’t seen them engaged like that before, I don’t know if it was the book choice (children like mice and cookies)or the pre-reading activities. Just the time for pre-reading was a bit long but worth it.
