English language learners (ELLs) have unique challenges that they face in the classroom.
While they are learning the necessary content, they are also learning the cognitive academic
language that is essential to school success . Not only are they learning content, but they are asked to do so in a language that they are also learning.
ELL student need support in learning academic content while also learning cognitive academic language. There are several things that teachers can include for ELL students to provide this support. These include teaching morphology to raise word consciousness, teaching students to use cognates, and teaching students to use L1 to L2 transfer.
